Are Gift Cards Region-Locked? What to Check Before You Buy

Short answer: yes, almost always. A gift card is issued for a specific country, and it only redeems on an account tied to that country. This single detail causes most "my code does not work" problems.

Why platforms do this

Prices, catalogs and taxes differ by country. A card bought in one market cannot fund an account in another, because the platform treats them as separate stores.

How it works per platform

• Apple: the card must match your Apple account country. You can change the country, but only after spending your balance and clearing active subscriptions.
• Google Play: same rule, plus a hard limit — you can only change country once every 12 months, and your balance does not transfer.
• PlayStation: the strictest. Sony does NOT let you change the region of an existing account; you would need a new account in that region.
• Xbox / Microsoft: changeable, but you must spend your existing balance first.
• Steam: the thing that must match is your WALLET CURRENCY, not the country on your profile — an account can show one country and still hold a wallet in another currency.

Check this before you buy (30 seconds)

1. Open the store or account settings on the platform
2. Find the country/region on the account — or, for Steam, the currency symbol on any price
3. Buy the gift card for exactly that country or currency

If you already bought the wrong one

Do not keep retrying the code. Repeated failed attempts can flag the account, and a mismatched code will not convert on its own. Keep the code and ask support before doing anything else.
