Are Gift Cards Region-Locked? What to Check Before You Buy

Short answer: yes, almost always. A gift card is issued for a specific country, and it only redeems on an account tied to that country. This single detail causes most "my code does not work" problems.

Why platforms do this

Prices, catalogs and taxes differ by country. A card bought in one market cannot fund an account in another, because the platform treats them as separate stores.

How it works per platform

• Apple: the card must match your Apple account country. You can change the country, but only after spending your balance and clearing active subscriptions.
• Google Play: same rule, plus a waiting period — at least 90 days between country changes, and you must be in the new country with a local payment method. Your balance does not transfer: it stays locked to the previous region.
• PlayStation: the strictest. Sony does NOT let you change the region of an existing account; you would need a new account in that region.
• Xbox / Microsoft: changeable, but you must spend your existing balance first.
• Steam: the thing that must match is your WALLET CURRENCY, not the country on your profile — an account can show one country and still hold a wallet in another currency.

Check this before you buy (30 seconds)

1. Open the store or account settings on the platform
2. Find the country/region on the account — or, for Steam, the currency symbol on any price
3. Buy the gift card for exactly that country or currency

If you already bought the wrong one

Do not keep retrying the code. Repeated failed attempts can flag the account, and a mismatched code will not convert on its own. Keep the code and ask support before doing anything else.

Minimum age, account security and alternatives

Each platform sets its own minimum age: 13 for a personal account on Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, Apple and Google, 18 on PlayStation and Amazon. Minors buy through the supervised accounts each platform offers (Microsoft family group, Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, PlayStation family manager), where the adult approves purchases and sets a monthly cap. If the gift card is for a minor, hand it to the adult who manages that account.

Security protocol that applies to every gift card:

• Redeem the code only on the platform's official website or app, never through a link received by chat.
• Turn on two-step verification on the account where you redeem: without it, anyone with your password spends your balance.
• Never share a code with someone who asks for it "to verify it": a redeemed code cannot be recovered. No company, bank or agency collects payments in gift cards.
• A gift card never requires giving us access to your account: the code arrives by email and you redeem it yourself. Nobody at Krosty Shop will ask for your password.

Alternatives when a gift card does not fit (different region, platform without gift cards, minor without an account): a wallet top-up (Zinli, Wally) to pay directly in the store, the gift card of the region that matches the account (we stock Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina for several brands) or, for mobile games, a top-up by player ID where the game supports it.

Which US gift cards work from Venezuela (and which need a US account)

Most of the US gift cards we sell work normally from Venezuela: you redeem the code in your own account and the balance stays in US dollars. The exception is the group of platforms that tie the balance to the account region: Apple, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo. On those, the account must be set to the United States. Amazon.com, Steam (USD wallet), Netflix, Riot, Razer and Blizzard need no such step. Roblox and Twitch cards are meant for accounts registered in the United States.

So the real question is not "is it region-locked?" but "what does this platform check?". Amazon checks the store (amazon.com). Netflix checks the billing currency. Steam checks the wallet currency. Riot checks the game server. Roblox checks the country set in the account settings, not your IP. Only Apple, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Google Play check the country of the account itself.

2026 updates worth knowing

• Google Play: the official help page now says you must wait at least 90 days between country changes (it used to be described as once every 12 months). The old balance is not deleted: it stays locked to the previous region and reappears if you switch back.
• Microsoft: you cannot change the account region if you did so in the last three months, and an active Microsoft 365 or Game Pass bought in another region blocks the change until it expires.
• Steam: Venezuela sits in the LATAM – US Dollar region in Steam's own developer documentation, so a Venezuelan account already has a USD wallet. Third-party codes have been currency-locked since 2020; the redeem page still says codes "convert", which the community has flagged as outdated for years.
• Riot: cash codes are server-specific (our card covers LAN and LAS; Venezuela is on LAN), PC only, and never expire.

The exact error messages and what they mean

• Xbox: "This code is for another region. It was purchased in a different region from your account." The account country does not match; Microsoft will not convert it.
• Apple: "This code must be redeemed in another storefront." Same cause; Apple will not convert it either.
• Steam: "The currency of the code you are trying to redeem may be different from the region you are in." Your wallet is in another currency, usually because the account was created years ago from another country.
• Google Play: "This code is not valid in your country." The payment profile country does not match; a VPN does not fix it.
• Netflix: a currency-mismatch message. The card currency must equal the currency your account is billed in; accounts billed through Apple or a carrier bundle cannot redeem cards at all.

Balance caps and other small-print limits

• Nintendo caps the US balance at US$800 per account.
• Google Play has a per-country balance cap; if you hit it you must spend and wait 24 hours.
• PlayStation wallets have a regional cap; the code will not go in until you spend some balance.
• Netflix accounts have a maximum gift balance, and extra-member profiles cannot redeem codes.
• Apple balance cannot be shared with your Family Sharing group and cannot buy other gift cards.
• US stores (PSN, Xbox, Amazon, Nintendo) may add sales tax based on the state in the account address; it comes out of the same balance.

Community tips that hold up

• Keep a dedicated US-region account just for redeeming; it protects your main account and its purchase history.
• Do not use a VPN to force a region: Apple, Microsoft and Google look at the account, and on Steam it is grounds for suspension.
• Keep the email with the code until the balance shows in the account.
